According to aunt Julie, my grandfather Ed Schickling's father was German. His mother, who I met in upstate New York 1996, was from Naples, Italy. She came to the U.S. when she was three. Her maiden name was Tufaro- first name Catherine.
My grandmother Phyllis' maiden name was Retherford, which is Scottish. Her father Julius Retherford was a history professor. Her mother Julia's maiden name was Wheaton, who came from English ancestors. Somewhere between the two of them there is some Welsh too.
According to my father (relayed from my mom), my grandfather Mel Goldberg was from Brooklyn, NY. His father Jack Goldberg and mother Celia Silverstein were 100% Jewish Ukrainian. My grandmother JoAnn Petersen's mother (Vivian Alice Sundsmo) was half Norwegian, half German. Her father Lawrence Wilfredth Petersen was half Norwegian, half Danish.
By my calculations, that makes me 3/16ths German, 1/8th Italian, 1/8th English, 1/8th Scottish, 1/4th Jewish Ukrainian, 1/8th Norwegian, 1/16th Danish. Throw in a trace of Welsh for good measure.
