Here are some songs that I think are just as good in quality and have the general epic-ness as the insanely popular prog. rock standard Stairway To Heaven. It's remarkable how this is one of the greatest songs in history, yet it isn't written in the conventional verse-chorus-verse format. I think the progressive songs below could have had similar success had they garnered more listeners from better marketing.
Symphony 2 Adagio, Rachmaninoff. 1907.
Trio And Group Dancers, Charles Mingus. 1963.
Selflessness, John Coltrane. 1965
I Never Asked To Be Your Mountain, Tim Buckley. 1967

Becoming Insane, Infected Mushroom. 2007
Ursuline, Malajube. 2009
Tropical Disease, Air. 2009
Granted this is all subjective, but I still feel that at least a few of these would have reached Stairway status if the record companies, instead of cloning musical formats to spoon-feed the masses, deemed creatively progressive works more radio-worthy. Maybe hundreds of years from now, when the fog has risen from this society's basin, more songs like these will get the recognition they deserve.
