I believe our allies would turn against us if the founding fathers had not implemented the “4-year rule” on a president’s terms. A lifetime of someone like Donald Trump in the White House would have been too insufferable for them to put up with. The only reason we’ve kept our allies is that they've been patient enough to sit through this disturbing period of our history, in hopes that our next elected leader will be more sensitive to what they need, as well as what the world needs.
In his short tenure as president, Trump has started a trade war with China, which has hurt our allies more than it’s hurt us; embraced Russia and North Korea as exemplary states; disrespected Australia’s leader over a refugee issue; ignored a handshake from the Prime Minister of Germany and been critical of her policies; criticized many of the UK’s policies and handlings of tragic events; insulted Mexico by suggesting they were sending nothing but murderers and rapists over the border (not to mention pressuring them into funding his beloved wall); and risked a trade war with our other closest neighbor, Canada.
How does a president expect to keep his allies after doing all this? By using old-fashioned bullying tactics. He knows he can get away with it because he won’t be in office forever, and most of the western world depends on the United States' foreign policy for economic and political support. But if this were the 1700s, and the king of our country were throwing insults at our neighbors left and right, wouldn’t the intuition be to eliminate the terrorist-tyrant so they wouldn’t have to deal with him for another 30 years? We owe much gratitude to the founding fathers for being able to foresee what a man like Trump would do to our country’s image. If four years is enough to persuade them, we hope eight won’t have to be considered.
