Tears in Rain

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe,

Attacked ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion,

I watched C-beams glitter in the dark at Tannhauser Gate.

All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Time to die.

That's the single best death monologue I've seen in a film.  Roy Batty says it before he's about to die during the climax of Blade Runner, a film that's grown on me over the years.

I don't know what C-beams are, or where Tannhauser Gate is, but I do know death.  Why are we all afraid of it?  Fight Club addresses the same philosophical problem.  The fear of death prevents us from truly being free, of doing things we want that would otherwise threaten to kill us.  Things like letting go of a steering wheel, jumping off a bridge, or climbing a mountain.  People who don't fear death do not let it stand in their way.  They are truly free.  Adventurers, free spirits, extreme athletes; they are the most enlightened beings of our world.
