The Dark Knight Ending Debunked

Recently I updated my Top Films list on Ranker and put The Dark Knight at eight (a sizable promotion due to its lingering fame), so I decided to give it another watch just to make sure it really deserved it.  The brilliant plot was unfolding beautifully, and towards the end I was feeling confident that my number eight ranking had done the film justice.   However, in the closing minutes I was shocked to find that instead of framing The Joker, they let Batman take the fall for Harvey Dent’s crimes.  If it was so easy to make Harvey a hero by framing Batman, then why would they destroy the true hero’s (Batman) reputation and not fabricate a story in which the true bad guy (Joker) takes the fall?  Am I missing something, or is the ending of one of the best movies of all time complete nonsense?  Director Christopher Nolan must have felt that an ironic twist was needed to elevate its greatness, but it didn't.   Just because Dent took the fall for Batman earlier in the film doesn't mean you need to complicate the ending by having Batman return the favor.

Regardless, there were a lot of improbable outcomes in the plot, as blockbuster action films are prone to having.   I was willing to let them slide because the film is so intense and entertaining, but it's just not realistic enough to be on the same level as Silence Of The Lambs, or even Star Wars.  Yeah, Star Wars is set in a distant galaxy, but at least there are only a few miraculous events and not a million.  Will have to consider demoting it on the rank list.
