According to Alan Taylor in his book American Revolutions, Americans were taxed more for their war debts by the states than they'd been by the British before the war started. This is some wicked irony considering the original reason for going to war was because the British had taxed us too much. I may be an American, but even I can admit it's hilarious that karma bit we, the provocateurs, in our self-righteous asses. To add wood to the fire, Canadian Loyalists ended up being taxed less than their American counterparts, simply because the British didn't want another revolution right after losing the first one. They didn't tax the Canadians nearly as much as the Americans they'd riled up, even though Loyalists didn't mind paying British taxes at all. Essentially, Patriots fought a war that ended up benefiting the Loyalists who'd opposed them and assisted the British in their war effort. God, I love this country!
