Of all the vexing phrases in the Bible, turning the other cheek (Matthew 5:39) is among the top. Some might think Jesus is telling us to accept abuse, but that isn't what he meant. Turning the other cheek is what one should do rather than taking an eye for an eye. If someone wrongs you or insults you, you're better off not letting it bother you so much that you'd seek revenge on the person. Seeking peace is a better route than victory in such cases. Once they see you aren't interested in fighting, usually the aggressor will relent their hostility toward you, depending on their age and maturity level.
However, if it continues, turning the other cheek is not in your best interest: safety and self-respect are. I only give people two chances. If they do not surrender their aggression, I either distance myself or fight back in non-violent ways. Some are less merciful than others. Never let an abuser validate their behavior by apologizing and giving them more chances to exhibit the power they think they need.
